Element 4A: Professional Development/Learning Communities: The principal ensures that the school is a professional learning community. I have had the opportunity to be a part of and lead PLCs during my internship. The information covered has varied. We have talked about expectations on how we would address our school goals, what to expect in evaluations and examples of evidence for those standards in the evaluations, as well as covering data from student testing and how we would address the issues we saw in student learning. Element 4B: Recruiting, Hiring, Placing and Mentoring of staff: The school executive establishes processes and systems in order to ensure a high-quality, high-performing staff. I have had the privilege of sitting in on interviews for the school counselor, a special education teacher assistant, and even tutors for our school. I have also checked references for my principal to ensure the information of the interviewees character and work ethic is accurate. It has been a great experience to be a part of hiring high-quality individuals to teach our wonderful students. Element 4C: Teacher and Staff Evaluation: The principal evaluates teachers and other staff in a fair and equitable manner with the focus on improving performance and, thus, student achievement. I have had the opportunity to evaluate staff and help in their growth as a teacher. I have had meaningful conversations with staff, including their areas of strength and what areas they can improve on. I have built trust with the staff because they are aware of my goal to help them improve in their practice. Here is an example of an excerpt from the music teacher's observation as well as the admin team's assignments for observations. |
